Monitoring Plan

This semester I had the pleasure of constructing a monitoring plan with some of my fellow students in the Wildlife Ecology for Conservation Program at the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation. We focused on monitoring seed-eating passerine species at Jones Nature Preserve, located in Rappahannock County, Virginia. We were interested in seeing whether land management practices had an effect on bird habitat preference.

The Team

Featured above is a picture of my monitoring plan group. I had the pleasure of working with Elizabeth Dupuis, Meggie Nelson, and Jon Clark--the bird specialist himself! We had a great time pushing our way through the thick vegetation in our survey plots and guessing which birds we were seeing!

Jones Nature Preserve

Jones Nature Preserve is run and managed by Bruce and Susan Jones and is located in Rappahannock County, Virginia. This was where surveying took place for our monitoring project. We focused on two different habitats within the preserve: Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) plot and a warm season native grass (WSG) plot.
