Recycle or Die

Week 4 Blog

I truly believe that the student showcase of photographic essays was a success. Although we are all conservation students at SMSC and the photos mean something to us, I feel as if the message from our photos could definitely speak to members of the Front Royal community. I was so impressed with how well the presentation conveyed the message of conservation that I suggested the activity to a professor at my other school. I convinced him that it would be a budget friendly activity for our environmental club and that a similar slideshow presentation could be played in the dining hall for other students to appreciate as well.

As a student working for the office of sustainability in the recycling department at Bridgewater College, it is easy to see the lack of effort that other students make to recycle properly. I can hold meetings for students to come and learn about recycling, but let’s be honest… they’d rather spend more time drinking or goofing off. I think that if my school were to put together a longer, more accessible photo essay on the theme of recycling then hopefully some students would understand its importance. Many of the students that I go to school with will throw things such as used feminine products and guacamole all over perfectly good recyclable materials. It demeans the time and effort that other students spent to recycle properly when they do this. I wonder if I took pictures of this then students would understand the health risks that they are putting the recycle team at and even more so, the amount of recycling that has to be thrown away because it is then considered contaminated.

There are so many good people in this world that are trying to do good things for our earth and even more people who are trying way too hard at not giving a beaver’s dam. I wish that we could open up the world’s eyes into the realm of conservation and I think that conservation photography is certainly the ticket into it. Photographs don’t necessarily last forever, but they sure can make a significant impact. I hope that my professor and his club are able to make a difference in changing the way our school views conservation, or at least start by helping the recycling team out a little more.
